SSAT scoring system

The SSAT score scale at the Elementary level, Middle Level, and Upper level is different because the Elementary level will have a different scoring method for the Middle level and Upper-level tests. Students will receive three types of scores on the SSAT score report: raw score, scale score, and percentile ranking.

Raw score

The raw score is determined by calculating the number of wrong answers and correct answers. At all levels, each correct answer will score 1 point. For each wrong answer, 0.25 points will be deducted. The raw score of each section will be based on:

Raw score = (Total number of correct answers x 1 point) – (Total number of incorrect answers x 0.25 points)

Scale score

The scale score is determined by the conversion table from the raw score. Different scales are used for different levels and are adjusted for each test. Each level is scored on a different scale.

  • Elementary Level: Each section (Math, Verbal, Reading) has a scale of 300 to 600. Total score: 900 – 1800. Median score: 1350.
  • Middle Level: Each section (Math, Verbal, Reading) has a scale of 440 to 710. Total score: 1320 – 2130. Median score: 1725.
  • Upper Level: Each section (Math, Verbal, Reading) has a scale of 500 to 800. Total score: 1500 – 2400. Median score: 1950.

Percentile rank

The ranking is a special feature of the SSAT compared to other tests, this score will be compared by the admissions committee and classified the ability of students of the same age and sex who have taken the SSAT in the last 3 years. This rating ranges from 1% to 99% and indicates the percentage of students whose scores are lower or equal to the scores of other students.
